Over the past several months, I have had the opportunity to observe the work practices of Just Working Construction as they erected a completely new home on Regent Street in London, Ontario, directly across the street from my home.

Our family was truly fortunate to have Just Working Construction design and build our energy-efficient home and we could not speak highly enough about our experiences working with the company and their crew.

Prior to hiring Just Working Construction, we had explored a variety of different options when researching builders and had spoken with numerous companies and organizations. At various points, it became clear to us that many builders aren’t well-versed in environmentally responsible building techniques and were reluctant to take the extra time, care, and effort to do things right. When we did try to talk with other builders in our area about energy-efficient building, default suggestions were usually to use less environmentally-responsible approaches such as spray foam (we had read about spray foam posing long term risks to the integrity of the framing where it is applied). It is not an exaggeration to say that some builders told us that they were only interested in meeting building code requirements and would not recommend taking any additional steps to exceed code.

From the very outset, Just Working approached our project not just as another build, but as family home that we feel confident will stand the test of time into the generations of our family that follow. We spoke weekly throughout the design process and the company welcomed us to play as active a role as we wished throughout the initial planning and decision-making stages. When we sought changes to the plans to better suit our budget, the company were quick to work with us and the architect to realize the necessary changes in a timely manner and took considerable care to arrive at solutions that worked for us. The company shared our passion for making more environmentally-responsible decisions where possible, and were very transparent in presenting us with different materials and approaches along with the environmental benefits and associated costs at every step in the process. We felt like our ideas were truly valued and respected throughout, and the crew showed a genuine enthusiasm when discussing our home with us.

On that note, we have to say that the crew were superb. We had the same people on site from start to finish, so they were intimately familiar with every inch of the build and it was clear that they had very high standards for the quality of their work. Furthermore, we could not have asked for a more courteous, respectful, and friendly crew. My wife frequently commented on what “gentlemen” the crew were (note: the crew was not exclusively male) and several neighbours commented on how approachable, friendly, and professional the crew was. As of this writing, we’ve been in our home for approximately eight months, and we are continually impressed with the quality of the build. In fact, we recently had an energy advisor visit our home who commented that we had “done everything right” from her perspective and she said that our home was the most air-tight that she had ever tested. Indeed, her independent test confirmed that our home—although not a certified passive house—exceeds the air-tightness requirements for passive house construction.

While we don’t doubt that other builders might build more quickly and reduce costs by cutting corners, Just Working Construction created a home for us that exceeded our hopes and expectations. We could not recommend them highly enough.

We were recommended Jeff and his team by a friend and we could not be happier. Jeff came to our home talked about our vision for the house and offered many suggestions that helped improve our initial design. We needed architectural drawings and they were able to recommend a great company that was very budget-friendly. We set a schedule and were ready to renovate. Then Covid-19 started and everything was delayed by the city. Jeff was on top of the crisis and was able to offer updates so we could begin as soon as possible. Once we started his crew was on time, very friendly, and cleaned every night prior to leaving. I was very impressed by his crew. The job lasted 2 months and we are more than happy with the results. We opened up walls and added beams to support the house. We rerouted plumbing and added pot lights throughout the main floor, and we reworked the original stairs in the home to be safer for our children. The team was great and we came in UNDER Budget!!! I would highly recommend Jeff and his team for a home renovation.
