In the basement of the Waterloo house, four men are working. They’re pouring a concrete floor and installing drywall. Light from large, new windows fills the space.

But this is no ordinary renovation. Two of the workers are newcomers to Canada. And the house where they’re working will soon be home to up to 20 refugees.

The house is the new residence of Welcome Home, part of Ray of Hope’s Refugee Support Services. Jeff Van Gyssel, owner of Just Working Construction Inc., leads the crew.
