Just Fairview: Good Riddance to the Yellow Bricks

I never did like those yellow bricks. I think I have talked about painting them since the day we moved in. We always had big ideas floating around, so instead of updating the ugly we ended up adding beige windows and a corner of grey siding. This house was confused, to say the least. I’m hoping that the new design makes up for our past mistakes.

Other things I will not miss is our squishy front hall and our lack of bathrooms. Oh! AND the laundry in our unfinished basement with the rivets of missing concrete that I have to jump over. There was a baby’s change pad placed over the rocks at one point so I could step without hurting my feet.

What I will miss though is my bedroom.

I worked hard, searching for the perfect old set of furniture and refinishing them to a beautiful rustic white. I then painted the walls just a shade darker with a perfectly grey bedspread. It was spot on to the picture that was in my head, and probably my proudest design work to date. This furniture will not fit into my new room, a necessary sacrifice to account for a new ensuite. I’m just hoping I can do it justice, however, I doubt it will contain the same labour of love.

The other room I will miss is “the baby’s room”.

My wonderful mother-in-law took a picture I found on Pinterest and made my dreams come true. During a weekend-long babymoon, she came to watch my 3 children and painted the most beautiful mural. Wonderwoman! I am so sad that there will be a door knocked into the wall exactly where this tree grows.

And, when I begin to dwell too long on the memories we are leaving behind, I focus on our purpose for this project. Yes, selfishly, I’m excited for more than 1100 sq ft, 3 bedrooms, and 1 bathroom for 6 of us to share. But more importantly, we feel called to complete this renovation. Unsure of exactly where God is leading us, but certain we are providing jobs, providing homes, and helping take care of his planet.

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
